An invisible grill runs fine stainless cables vertically at close centres between a top and a bottom track. From inside it reads as almost nothing; from outside it closes the opening to anything you would worry about a child getting through.
What decides whether it holds is where those tracks are fixed. Ours go into structure, never into plaster — and the cables can be re-tensioned years later without taking the grill apart.
